Haiti: God’s Wrath?

AP

This is my first blog. Earthquake in Haiti just happened. I am affected.  And so is the rest of the world.  I want my voice to be heard.  I want to share my comments on current events  to my readers. People may like it, others may not, but, hey, that is the essence of democracy:  Freedom.

During this moment of grief, Pat Robertson commented on Haiti’s devastation as a consequence for  making “a pact with the devil.” The comment was distasteful.  I was greatly repulsed because the timing was wrong.  There are other better times to evangelize to people, but not right now while there are still people trying to survive under the rubble.  It’s still a time where mothers are grieving for the lost their of children, and  children crying for being orphaned. Even if Haiti’s history pact is true (read here), they are still human beings.  It’s still a sad situation.

Pat Robertson’s quote on “pact with the devil” refers to Haiti’s history: In August 14, 1971, a group of houngans (voodoo priests), led by a former slave houngan named Boukman, made a pact with the Devil at a place called Bois-Caiman.  According to history, Boukman asked Satan for his help in liberating Haiti from the French. In exchange, the voodoo priests offered to give the country to Satan for 200 years and swore to serve him. On January 1, 1804, the nation of Haiti was born and thus began a new demonic tyranny. Even if the contract ended in 2004, voodoo is still being practiced in Haiti. Haitians are 70 percent Catholic, 30 percent Protestant, and 100 percent voodoo (read here)

However, I believe voodoo is definitely evil!  Their rituals from cannibalism to child sacrifice to satisfy evil spirit are non-negotiable to me.  Having debated this with some people in a forum, I am amazed that many really defend this religion to the extent of saying “it’s not evil.”  Watch BBC’s Tim Whewell’s documentary on voodoo’s practice on child sacrifice here

Remember Sodom and Gomorra?  I find it strange that while Haiti badly needs water, Dominican Republic is enjoying rain. The weather never sent rain to Haiti until now even if they share the same Espanola island in South America read here

Is it God’s wrath then?

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7Therefore do not be partners with them. Ephesians 5: 6-7
